May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is an annual celebration recognizing the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States, including cultures from the entire Asian Continent and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Members of the AAPI community have contributed significantly to American culture and society and have a long history in the United States. Unfortunately, since their immigration to the U.S., Asians have been met with xenophobia, racism, bias and violence. From the abuse, robbing and murdering of Chinese workers in San Francisco in the 1850s, to anti-Asian racism and violence resulting from racist and xenophobic rhetoric over the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the AAPI community has been the target of immense intolerance and hate crimes.
ALA-Gateway stands with our AAPI colleagues and friends in support of their many contributions and against all manner of intolerance leveled against them. In the words of Grace Lee Boggs, the Chinese American author, philosopher and social activist, “The only way to survive is by taking care of one another.”
